This dark play is fitting for the darkest time of year. In fact the script tells us that it opens “upon the rather terrifying darkness of the late afternoon before the feeble dawn of gaslight and tea.” It is from this play that the term “gaslighting” derives.

A thriller set in the Victorian era, it was  first produced in 1935. The scene is set in the Manningham household where Jack Manningham is slowly and deliberately driving his wife, Bella, insane.
